The UMCAT Story

More Than Three Decades of Transforming Journalism Education in Uganda

“Every great institution begins with a vision. The story of UMCAT is the story of a vision that grew into a national institution dedicated to developing professional communicators for Uganda and beyond.”
The UMCAT Story

A Legacy of Excellence, A Vision for the Future

  1. The BeginningThe history of UMCAT School of Journalism and Mass Communication is rooted in a simple but compelling vision: to improve the quality, professionalism and accessibility of journalism and communication education in Uganda. In the mid-1990s, Uganda's media industry was experiencing rapid growth. Liberalization of the broadcasting sector had created new opportunities for newspapers, radio and television stations, leading to an unprecedented demand for trained journalists, broadcasters, public relations practitioners and communication professionals. While the industry was expanding quickly, opportunities for specialised professional training remained limited. Recognizing this gap, a young graduate of Mass Communication from Makerere University, Charles Ogwel, envisioned an institution that would focus exclusively on journalism and communication consultancy and training. The goal was not simply to train and award academic qualifications, but to produce ethical, competent and practically skilled professionals capable of serving society through responsible communication. That vision gave birth to United Media Consultants and Trainers (UMCAT) (U) Ltd which gave birth to UMCAT School of Journalism and Mass Communication, one of Uganda's pioneering private institutions dedicated specifically to journalism, media and communication education.

  2. Building an InstitutionLike many visionary institutions, UMCAT's journey began with modest resources but unwavering determination. The early years demanded resilience, innovation and an uncompromising commitment to quality. The institution focused on developing programmes that combined academic knowledge with practical skills. Students were encouraged not only to understand communication theories but also to apply them through reporting, broadcasting, public speaking, public relations practice, media production and community engagement. This practical philosophy quickly distinguished UMCAT from many conventional training institutions. Employers increasingly recognised the value of graduates who could transition confidently from the classroom into professional newsrooms and communication departments. Through consistency, discipline and close engagement with the media industry, UMCAT gradually earned the confidence of students, employers and professional practitioners across the country.

  3. Growing with Uganda's Media IndustryAs Uganda's communication landscape evolved, so too did UMCAT. The institution continuously reviewed its programmes to reflect changing industry needs, embracing developments in radio, television, print journalism, public relations, digital communication, multimedia production and emerging communication technologies. Recognising that professional communication extends beyond traditional newsrooms, UMCAT broadened its training to prepare graduates for careers in government, business, civil society organisations, development agencies, education, corporate communication and entrepreneurship. This responsiveness enabled the institution to remain relevant while maintaining its core identity as a specialised journalism and communication training institution.

  4. Expanding Access to Professional EducationBelieving that quality education should not be confined to Uganda's capital city—Kampala, UMCAT deliberately expanded its reach through regional training centres; Arua Centre to serve the West Nile region of Uganda, Eastern Congo and South Sudan. UMCAT Gulu was opened to give access to young people from Northern Uganda, UMCAT Soroti and UMCAT Mbale were simultaneously opened to serve the Eastern part of Uganda covering the Teso/Karamoja, the Elgon/Bukedi and Busoga regions respectively. This strategy brought journalism and communication education closer to aspiring professionals in different parts of the country, reducing geographical barriers and creating opportunities for talented young people who might otherwise have been unable to pursue professional media education. Through this expansion, UMCAT strengthened its national footprint while contributing to the development of local journalism and communication capacity throughout Uganda.

  5. Contributing to National DevelopmentBeyond training individual professionals, UMCAT has contributed to the broader development of Uganda's communication sector. The institution has actively participated in professional discussions, curriculum development initiatives and industry collaborations aimed at strengthening journalism education and improving professional standards. Its graduates have gone on to serve in radio and television stations, newspapers, government institutions, private companies, development organisations, educational institutions and community media initiatives throughout the country. Many alumni have themselves become media entrepreneurs, communication consultants, educators and mentors, multiplying UMCAT's impact across generations.
